Has Madonna Given Up Acting For Good?
'W.E.' director tells MTV News she prefers directing because 'If I'm the actor, I'm just ... I'm a pawn.' By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Madonna has given the whole thespian thing a try several times over. So, the idea of hitting the big screen again in front of the camera doesn't really appeal much to the "W.E." writer and director.
"No [I don't want to act], but I do [act] every day of my life," she told MTV News, before waxing a bit more philosophical about her future ambitions for a career on the big screen.
"I like directing better," she further explained. "If I write it and direct it, then it's my voice. If I'm the actor, I'm just ... I'm a pawn."
As Madonna embarks on yet another chapter in her always-evolving career, she explains that she hopes that people will be able to love her for every project she's attached herself to in her decades-spanning career. "I'd rather not divide things up into categories, but I prefer the idea that people would say that I contributed to the culture, the zeitgeist from a female perspective as a musician, as a songwriter, as a filmmaker, in my political point of views of the issues that I've stood by and fought for," she said. "I hope that I consider all of these things to be a part of my body of work and I'd rather not go, 'Oh, she'll be remembered as a great filmmaker, a great songwriter.' "
"W.E." opens Friday and follows two parallel love stories. It focuses on the vintage, tabloid romance between American divorcée Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII in the 1930s and the modern-day woman, Wally (played by Abbie Cornish), who becomes obsessed with their headline-making affair.
This Friday she also releases her first MDNA single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'," as well as its video. She's set to take the stage for the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A, who also appear on the track.

What Stories Will 'Pop' In 2012?
From music to TV to celebrity babies, MTV News looks ahead to all of the big releases expected in the coming months.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>It's a new year and that means that there's lots of ooey-gooey pop goodness all ready to pour out in 2012. Between celebrity babies, music and Hollywood, fans should gear up for some really big stuff in the coming year. But if history has taught us anything, as hard as we might plan, pop culture always has a way of sneaking up and surprising us. Not that we're complaining. So get your planners out: MTV News is looking ahead at what to expect in the world of <i>pop</i> culture.
</p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717202" width="240" height="211"></div><p>
<b>Music</b><br>
There are lots of big <a href="/news/articles/1676533/most-anticipated-albums-2012.jhtml">album releases</a> slated for 2012. Crossover queen <a href="/news/articles/1674880/nicki-minaj-pink-friday-roman-reloaded.jhtml">Nicki Minaj will release <i>Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded</i></a> just in time to show her Barbz and Kenz some love on Valentine's Day. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a> already has confirmed that she will drop her next album come spring. Fans already got a taste of it when the single <a href="/news/articles/1676052/madonna-gimme-all-your-luvin-single.jhtml">"Gimme All Your Luvin' "</a> leaked on the Internet.
"American Idol" alum Adam Lambert is readying the release of his next album, <i>Trespassing,</i> set to drop in March. Willow Smith's fans should whip their hair back and forth as the tween's long-simmering debut album, <i>Knees and Elbows,</i> will finally drop in April. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> has teased his <a href="/news/articles/1675015/justin-bieber-new-album.jhtml"><i>Believe</i> album</a> for a summer release. He's shared that it will pick up where Justin Timberlake left off before he decided to focus on his acting. Basically, he's bringing sexy back.
There are two forthcoming albums that don't have exact release dates but are highly anticipated nonetheless. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> is already thinking about her next album and recently revealed to MTV News that she even has a title for her <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> follow-up</a> in mind. <a href="/news/articles/1672695/taylor-swift-acting-project.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> is knee-deep in and working hard on her follow-up to her phenomenally successful <i>Speak Now</i>.
<b>TV</b><br>
In between pumping out tunes, some big shows will also return in 2012. Everything from "The Secret Circle" to "2 Broke Girls" to "New Girl" will be back for more fun come the new year.
After a break, "Pretty Little Liars" will be back midseason. Will we finally find out who "A" is when season 2 resumes on January 2? Well, only that texting antagonist knows the answer. There are many other mysteries on "The Vampire Diaries" that will also have to be resolved once that show picks up again on January 5. And if all that drama is too much to handle, "Glee" will be back for more sing-along good times on January 17, with the <a href="/news/articles/1676521/glee-michael-jackson-tribute-set-list.jhtml">Michael Jackson tribute episode</a> airing one week later.
</p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722067" width="240" height="211"></div><p>
<b>Celebrity Babies</b><br>
2012 is poised to be a big year for famous babies. OK, so 2011 saw Mariah Carey and Dem Babies, but some of the most famous ladies in La La Land and beyond will become first-time moms in the new year, giving MC and her family a run for their money.
<a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">Beyoncé and Jay-Z</a> will welcome their first child into the world any day now. The twosome revealed they were in the family way at the VMAs back in August. Jessica Simpson and her fiancé, Eric Johnson, will also welcome their first little bundle of joy. The news of the pregnancy came after a lot of speculation about <a href="/news/articles/1673485/jessica-simpson-pregnant.jhtml">Simpson's expanding midsection</a>. As it turns out, it's a big year for triple-threat moms-to-be, with <a href="/news/articles/1669038/hilary-duff-pregnant.jhtml">Hilary Duff</a> also expecting a baby come 2012.</p>

<P>Fox's song-and-dance series "Glee" is no stranger to a star-studded cameo or two, with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, John Stamos and Kristin Chenoweth all walking the halls of McKinley High during the past two and a half seasons. And as the show returns from a month-long hiatus, Gleeks aren't the only ones anticipating a few more famous faces. As star Chris Colfer told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet, there's plenty to look forward to when New Directions warble again January 17.
"Well, the Michael Jackson episode ...," Colfer answered when asked about his most-anticipated upcoming episodes. "We have a Spanish episode coming up with Ricky Martin. We have a Valentine's Day episode coming up, so that's going to be fun."

Martin is slated to play "the hottest Spanish teacher ever in the history of Ohio," according to <a href="http://www.tvline.com/2011/11/glee-ricky-martin-season-3/" target="_blank">TVLine</a>. The actor/singer recently <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ricky_martin/status/155141894333140993" target="_blank">tweeted</a> a joyful picture from his first day on set.
As to how the King of Pop's prolific songbook will manifest itself in the January 31 tribute episode, Colfer explained, "Well, I sing part of 'Black [or] White.' I'm the 'White' in 'Black [or] White,' and I sing 'Ben,' that famous song he wrote for the rat."
The rodent in question is the pet of a young boy named Danny in the 1972 film "Ben." Jackson sang a version of the theme song that appeared in the movie's closing credits and was later included on his 1972 album also named <em>Ben</em>. The track "Black or White" was the first single off of Jackson's 1991 album <em>Dangerous</em>.

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album
Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias
Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News
Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s.
Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.
"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."
So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc.
"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it."
What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!
